Tips to Properly Store Your Inventory in a Storage Unit

Jun 08, 2022

As a business owner, you may have a lot of inventory that you need to store. You might unexpectedly face challenges especially if you don't have a lot of storage space available. Many people don't realize they can use storage units for more than just furniture and boxes of old photos. In fact, if you have a lot of inventory that takes up space in your office or warehouse, a storage unit can be a great solution.

Discover three tips on how to properly store your inventory in a storage unit and get the most out of your space.

Get Organized
As you prepare to store your inventory in a storage unit, take some time to plan and organize your space. You can first create a list of everything that you need to store. This strategy will help you to determine how much space you need, what kind of storage containers you need, and where you should place your items.

For example, if you have several boxes of inventory, make sure that you stack them in a way that won't damage the contents. You can also use storage shelves to keep things organized and easy to access.

If you have large items, such as furniture or machinery, measure them to be sure they'll fit in the storage unit. Think about how you'll get these bulky items into the storage unit. A dolly or hand truck can make this part easier for you.

In addition, consider the kind of storage unit you need. If you want to store valuable or delicate items, a climate-controlled storage unit is an ideal choice. This storage unit can help to protect your items from damage due to temperature and humidity changes.

Create a Map
Once you organize everything, take the time to create a map of your storage unit. This way, you'll know where everything is so you can find items when you need them.

To create a map, label each storage container with its contents first. Then, use a piece of painter's tape to create a grid on the floor of your storage unit. Be sure to label each section of the grid with the contents as well.

After you get everything in place, take a picture of the map and keep the photo in a safe place. You can also create a digital copy that you can access from your phone or computer.

This way, even if you need to send someone to get a few things from storage, they can find what they need without much hassle.

Pack Everything Carefully
How you pack your inventory can make a world of difference in how well your items hold up in storage. Remember to wrap delicate items in bubble wrap or packing peanuts to protect against accidental damage.

You can also use storage bins with lids to keep dust and pests out. If your items are especially vulnerable to rust, wrap them in a layer of wax paper. This packaging material creates a barrier between the item and the storage container. Wax paper can help prevent rust because the material is not as absorbent as cardboard or other materials. Also, avoid plastic storage bags as they can tear easily. And if you do use them, be sure to double-bag items and seal the bags tightly.

Remember to label boxes as Fragile if they contain items that could break easily. Place heavier items at the bottom of storage boxes so they don't crush delicate items that you store together. And if you still want to save space, you can store the boxes vertically rather than horizontally. This way, you get to use all the storage space in your unit –– even areas that are difficult to reach.
