3 Practical Tips for Accessing Your Storage Unit in Winter

Dec 23, 2021

The winter season brings a lot of messy weather, but you may still need to visit storage units to load and unload your items. When winter weather comes, access to your storage unit could be hindered by snow, slush, and mud. The last thing you want to do is bring extra moisture to the items you keep in your storage unit.

As you prepare for the winter season, check out some practical tips to keep your items protected and ensure you do not drag excess snow and slush into your storage unit. Many units offer complimentary snow removal after a big storm, but there are still ways the snowfall can enter your unit.

1. Winter Footwear & Accessories
Your shoes are often the main way snow, slush, and mud enter the unit. At the front of your unit, consider placing a moisture-absorbing welcome mat you can scrape your shoes on. The mat will help clear a lot of moisture off of the shoes.

You may also consider the use of a boot tray. A boot tray features raised sides, so excess moisture does not leak out and get into your unit. The last thing you want to deal with is mold forming and causing potential damage because water leaked on your items. The boot tray is an easy way to remove your shoes so you don't have to walk around in wet footwear.

If you do not want to walk around in socks as you organize storage items, consider using alternative footwear. Keep a pair of slippers or sandals in your storage unit for easy access each time you visit. Switch footwear within seconds and remain comfortable as you walk around. After the initial setup, you will build a routine where you quickly switch footwear and can easily access the items.

2. Use a Push Broom
Along with alternative footwear, you should also leave a push broom just inside of your unit door. As snow melts on the ground and drips off rooftops, you may find that puddles form right outside your unit.

A push broom allows you to clear out the extra water in front of your unit to prevent water from getting inside the unit. Use the push broom to clear out a large area and leave at least two feet of dry space near your unit door. The more you clear out the excess slush and water, the faster it will melt and evaporate.

3. Back Vehicles Up to the Unit Door
Many storage-unit properties allow owners to drive right up to their storage unit door. Pull up to your unit and then position your vehicle so the back end faces the door. Reverse the car until you are close to the storage unit's door. Every vehicle is different, so make sure you have enough space to open a truck tailgate, pop a trunk, or lift up a hatchback when needed.

When you pull up, make sure you shut off your engine so fumes are not going into the enclosed area. Once the vehicle is off, you can safely enter the unit and perform your tasks. Not only will the items remain dry, but you also reduce the distance you have to carry items to load them onto a vehicle, so you will minimize the amount of winter debris you and your possessions meet.

By following just a few of these tips, you can easily get through the winter season and have quick access to your storage as needed. Contact us at Brownsburg Self Storage Locker Inc. for more information on our unit rentals, sizes, and easy access.
