Not Moving Right Into Your Next Home? 5 Storage Tips

Aug 11, 2021

Do you have a gap between leaving your old home and being able to move into your new one? Whether you haven't bought a new house yet or you're waiting for yours to be remodeled, you'll need somewhere to store your stuff in the meantime. How can you make storage of your household goods easier and more successful during a transition that could take months? Here are five key tips.

1. Start With Staging

Many people stage their home, to some extent, when showing it to buyers. If you do this, save yourself time and effort by packing up goods that you won't need until you reach your new home. De-clutter the garage or backyard, make the guest room minimal, remove winter clothes from closets, or pack up knick-knacks to help sell the house and get a jump start on packing and storing your stuff.

2. Rent a Larger Space

Choose a larger storage space than you think you'll need. The extra room gives you space to maneuver around, both when first arranging your things and later when you need to access them. It also helps you organize better because you have room to work and to separate goods. Finally, the larger square footage means you don't have to stack things to the ceiling or try to save space - which makes everything safer longer.

3. Organize for Access

When your household goods will be in storage for what may be an extended period, organization is even more important. The longer your things are packed up, the more likely it is that you will need to access something during the transition. Prepare in advance by coming up with an organization plan that works for you. Many families use color coding to differentiate and group boxes by room, by use, or by family member. You may want to create an inventory to be kept on your phone or physically placed in the storage unit. Use similarly-sized bins and boxes to make things more uniform and easier to sort through. And write detailed descriptions that are clearly visible no matter how you store each box or bin.

4. Consider Dividing Goods

If you will store a lot of goods, consider a strategy to divide it all up into two categories - and two storage units. What division strategy might you use? One location could include the items that you are reasonably sure you won't need until you move into your new home. The other location could be filled with items that are more likely to be accessed. Or, you could separate items based on seasonal needs if your transition might stretch out several months. And if you're using smaller temporary housing, you could use one space for everyday overflow without disturbing the rest of the storage.

5. Choose Quality Storage

The longer your things will be in storage, the more important the storage's location is. Choose a storage facility with a solid reputation and good reviews. Make sure it has good security and is in a safe area. Talk with the facility about patrols, cameras and other security measures, and gate access. This is especially important if you won't be living in the local area. You also want a unit that will keep your things dry and prevents extreme changes in temperature between seasons. If your budget allows, you may want to consider climate-controlled storage.
